Creating a Purposeful Home

 Over this summer Ive been focused on creating a more simple, purposeful home without so much stuff and clutter. My kitchen cabinets included! 

Our cabinet for plates/bowls had been completely turned into a shove all. See those two ice cream buckets in the upper right hand? Those are full of parade candy from the previous year! WHY?!

 So I cleared the cabinet and gave more function to it.

 I painted the inside of the cabinets grey. We have a lot of underlying grey tones in the tile on the floor and counter tops.

 I purged a lot of our old big, heavy dishes. I kept all of the correll dishes that were my great grandmothers and then purchased a new set that was on sell for $22.00 that matched to ensure we had enough for our family.

 I then cut simple labels with my Silhouette for two reasons. 

1. I think its visually pretty and it brings me joy when I open the cabinet doors. 

2. For the little people in my home who help put dishes away, this now shows them there is a specific place for everything.

 I tend to be very sentimental. So there are some dishes I cant get rid of. Like the bowl that was given to us as a wedding present, the bowl that I remember my grandmother serving peaches in at meals and the large serving platter I purchased for the first Thanksgiving I hosted.

 

As I work through my home and clear things that are just taking up space I'm finding that its leaving room for thigns that I truly do find joy in and providing me with more peace and a clearer mindset.

Wash. Dry. Fold. Repeat.

 Our laundry room has had a little updating in the past few weeks!

 I needed some art to cover my ugly utility panel that sits right above our dyer. Remember my previous post about it?! (Click HERE to see the before).

 What I had in place there before was no longer working for me. So I updated it with this more modern approach that is a bit more functional.

 I have this small shelf above the dryer. Previously it was a piece of particle board. I ditched that guy and replaced with a 1x10 that I stained the same color as the trim of the sign.

 I filled this old jar with clothes pins. 

(We have a clothes line that we use frequently yet I never remember where my clothes pins are. Now they have a specific home).

 Added this small bin for our "lost socks".

 For the sign itself I used a piece of bead board. I painted the back in white chalk paint. Added the vinyl words that I cut out using my Silhouette . 

I then built a frame that measures 30" x 32". And added hooks to the back for hanging. 

 

It turned out exactly how I was envisioning it!  Simple design, a specific place for the things I use often and less stuff to distract my mind.

DIY LOVE Banner

 We seem to be in the in between season of holidays and decorating. 

But I needed to change things up a bit today. 

I made this super simple LOVE banner to hang above our table. 

I purchased these burlap pieces that we're already cut from Hobby Lobby some months ago. Be sure to print off or use the code on your phone for a 40% off coupon each time you go.

 I used my Cameo Silhouette to cut out the LOVE letters onto vinyl and placed them on to the burlap. 

Hung a piece of jute twine and used some little clothes pins to hang it.

 Here are a few other touches of "love" around our table...

A Thursday CAMEO silhouette Project

 

Happy December my friends! 

On this first day of the month I find myself home with a couple of sick kids. Praying the rest of the month brings health for the rest of the bunch. 

So when Im home with a little time I like to create. This project is for a certain someone for Christmas. She specifically asked for this sign {So I hope she loves it!!}

 I started with a 1x12 cut to 22 in.

 

Painted it black. 

 

I created the design I wanted with my silhouette, cut it out on vinyl and placed it on the piece of board. I then painted white over the entire piece. After it had dried I peeled off my vinyl and sanded lightly over the entire piece. 

I then added a little door knocker that I thought was cute.

"Roll" into Summer

 I've been seeing similar tires on Pinterest and think they are just the cutest! 

So I created my own version. 

I used an 8" car tire. My husband cut it in half (he said it was a big job). I then created a base with 8" 2x4's inside the tire rim and mounted them with standard screws. I topped the tire with a 1x10. Lots of paint. I really cute stencil I created with my Silhouette. (See More of my Silhouette projects HERE and HERE). And a handle. 

My 3 year old fits perfectly on this and so does my 6 year old.

You are the Sprinkles to My Cupcake

 

 Creating with my hands gives me freedom of the mind, helps to refresh me, equips me to be better and makes me smile! 

Here are two super fun 2x4 signs that I made. Aren't they the cutest?!

 

What You Need to Do:

Prepare your scraps of wood by cutting to size and sanding. Then paint them and distress to your liking. Use your Cameo Silhouette or similar tool to cut out a phrase of your choice and apply it to your block of wood. 

It's a fun way to display a piece of wood that would have been otherwise in the trash pile.

Grandparent's Day

 Grandparent's Day is just a week away!

Here's a simple yet classy gift to give to those incredible people who so lovingly call themselves grandparents to you and your kids.

I cut two pieces of wood down to size. These are 1x12's  cut to 8 inches. I then drilled holes into the top for the ribbon. Stained the top piece of wood and the bottom was painted with chalk paint. Then I created a design on my Cameo Silhouette and cut it out on vinyl.  Glued a clip on the front along with a cute picture of our kids.

Another Cameo Silhouette Project

 I love my Cameo Silhouette! Here's my most recent project I made with it. I stained an old piece of wood from the garage. Created the above design on some vinyl (I have tried other brands of vinyl in my machine but I have found that the actual Silhouette brand works the best not only at cutting but transferring it to a project), and TA-DA! I actually made this one for a Christmas gift but I'm in love with it and think I'll make one for our home too.

{DIY} Pillows

 I was blessed to get a Cameo Silhouette a few months ago and have had so much fun with it. Here is my most recent project.

I created the above image with my Silhouette, cut it out and then with craft paint I stenciled it on to some plain white fabric I had.

 I then ironed the back of the fabric to "set" the craft paint. After that was done I sewed the pillow case together and filled.  

Such a homey addition.
